Tropical Storm Eta
Florida has many chaotic storms throughout the year. One storm coming up that's supposed to be exceptionally big is called ETA. Tropical storms have high winds and extremely hard rainfall. Some issues with tropical storms are they often cause deaths, they destroy houses, and they can damage local passages.
Joe Biden and Powdered Creamer
On a recent episode of HBO’s “Real Time,” host Bill Maher famously compared Joe Biden to powdered coffee creamer. “Nobody loves it,” Maher explained, “but in a jam, it gets the job done.” I understand what Maher means here, but I also think it’s a little unfair. Biden is more than just an upgrade from Donald Trump. His presidency will almost certainly bring with it greater access to healthcare, more progressive tax policies, and a serious plan to fight climate change.
An Urgent Call to Entomologists
On Friday, October 23, entomologists in Washington state discovered the first nest of murder hornets in the US. This sounds terrifying, mostly because a murder hornet sting is extremely painful. As scary as a muder hornet sting sounds, the real threat they pose is to honeybees. If murder hornets pose such a serious threat to honeybees in the US, why aren’t they a major threat in their native Asia?
Overtime
On Wednesday, the NFL revealed that multiple members of the Tennessee Titans had tested positive for Covid-19. The league also revealed that this was not a surprise. Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL’s chief medical officer, stated: “Given how endemic this disease is in the population and given how easy it is to transmit, we expect we are going to have positive cases” On Friday, however, the NFL revealed that New England Patriots starting quarterback, Cam Newton, had also tested positive. This was not expected, and the future of the 2020-21 season is now in doubt.
The Debates
The debates were a mess. The Vice-Presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Mike Pence was more civil than the presidential debates, but they were still tough to watch. The stars of the Vice-Presidential debate turned out to be the housefly on Pence’s head. The presidential debate had no star either.
Get The Vote Out!
Elections are six weeks away! If you’re a kid like me, then you can’t vote yet. This is a bummer, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t influence others. An average of only 55% of eligible people vote.
On the Passing RBG
The passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg on September 18 was a tragedy for our country. This is perhaps a strange thing to say about someone who lived to be 87, but when it comes to Supreme Court justices, timing matters. It’s true that the US lost a powerful voice for equal rights with RBG’s death, but now that Donald Trump has nominated his third Supreme Court justice, the makeup of our highest court will take a huge step to the right.
Climate Change and California
Living in the Bay Area, it used to be easy to ignore all the talk about climate change. Then the wildfires came, turned our skies Halloween orange, and made it unhealthy to go outside. The pandemic had already made it risky to see our friends and family, but now it was potentially deadly even to go for a walk. This brought climate change home for many of us, and now there’s no excuse not to take the problem seriously.
Covid-19 and Middle School
One thing we’ve figured out over the past six months is that online learning is exhausting. Beyond the fact that we’re stuck at home, we’re forced to spend most of our day sitting in the same chair, staring at the same small screen. We wrestle with buggy online software and try our best to get through written instructions, all while never going off camera or eating any snacks.
What We’ve Lost, What We’ll (Hopefully) Gain
The COVID-19 pandemic is a struggle for teenagers in many ways, but the main source of our pain is the loss of social networks and all the contact with friends and family that made our world livable.
Is There Such a Thing as Bad Technology?
The point seems to be that exposure to tech is bad for our brains, and the blame for this damage lies squarely with the tech itself. But what is our responsibility? Are we right to blame our tools?
